Sahuaro can be found in the bustling neighborhood of Lavapies, a young and vibrant area recently named one of Madrid’s top “barrios” to invest in. While there are many new restaurants in the zone, Sahuaro’s mexican cuisine has largely become a staple in the community, and stands out amongst the crowd. From basic quesadillas and sopes, to more complex dishes such as Molé, Sahuaro’s seems to shine across all of its culinary dishes.
After having eaten at Sahuaro several times, it can safely be confirmed that the quality and taste of the food remains consistently at a high level. The guacamole has great fresh flavor, and the chefs utilize clever presentation, placing the guacamole within the shell of the avocado it was made from. The bandeja Sahuaro proves to be a delightful variation of several traditional Mexican staples, such as different types of quesadillas, sopesitos and flautas. While it is a vegetarian dish, it will leave even the largest “carnivores” asking for more. Finally, the star dish of the entire restaurant has to be the molé: enchiladas de pollo or queso, covered in a light, yet extremely complex chocolate sauce, topped with fresh avocados and greens. The dish is outstanding, and single handedly calls for one to make the journey to Sahuaro.
The service at Sahuaro is always very professional. There’s never too much interaction between the waiter and customer, simply an exchange of one’s order, and the delivery of the food. For this reason, it’s occasionally difficult to get the attention of the waiters once an order is placed, as they seemingly shift their entire attention to new arrivals. However, they are still always friendly, and the food always arrives in a timely manner, albeit, on the slower side.
The overall price at Sahuaro is extremely fair, with a majority of the dishes ranging between 10-15 euros. Unlike other restaurants, Sahuaro is not stingy with the quantity provided on each plate, and an entree will easily leave the customer satisfied. It’s not surprising that with its excellent flavors, and affordable prices, the restaurant has become one of the most popular in Madrid.
It’s important to address the ambiance. Undoubtedly, Sahuaro caters more to the younger crowd, especially given the nature of its location. That’s not to say that older customers can’t enjoy their meal; on the contrary, the molé is timeless. However, it would be advisable to take a group of friends to enjoy this great Mexican food, especially at night, when there is more action and fun to be had in the bustling barrio.
