Located in the luxurious Barrio de Salamanca, Kippu is a vibrant, tasty, up and coming Japanese restaurant that serves a plethora of excellent dishes to its customers. Founded by the owner and chef, Dani, the primary goal is to provide a modern take on traditional Japanese food, while respecting its origins.
The overall food quality at Kippu is very solid. While the fish and meat are fresh, this is not the place to have pieces that excel on the natural flavor of fish, such as sashimi or nigiri. Instead, Kippu thrives with its maki dishes, a beautiful synthesis of fish, sauce, and rice, that will not only satisfy the customer in terms of wonderful flavor, but will astound them with the meticulously crafted, aesthetic appearance of the dish. In addition to the Makis, Kippu has created its own style of Gunkanes, which have an umami flavor unlike any other plate I’ve personally experienced. In essence, the food quality is solid, and the taste is sublime.
The service at Kippu is always very professional and friendly. Drink orders will be taken and placed almost immediately upon arrival, and food dishes typically arrive only about 10 minutes after the customer orders their food. It is important to note that while the service is fast, this occasionally leaves the customer feeling a bit isolated after the order is placed, as the service has to focus on other clients, especially on weekends when the restaurant is more crowded. However, the owner of the restaurant is always in house, facilitating the service to flow smoothly, and allowing for any potential disputes or concerns in regards to the food, to be handled swiftly.
Great modern ambiance, especially for those who are young. The backdrop of the restaurant attempts to recreate a traditional Japanese style restaurant, somewhere in Osaka, and largely succeeds. The bar area is cozy and interactive, as the customer can visualize where their food is being made by the chefs. A lot of chatting, excitement, and overall fun times for all at the restaurant, creating a sensational atmosphere for all present.
Price largely is dependent on the perspective of the customer. In Madrid, it’s difficult to find quality sushi at lower price levels, simply because food exports cost more as a result of the inner location of the city relative to the Peninsula. However, pricing at Kippu seems fair, especially considering the aforementioned qualities of the restaurant. While it may not be the place to go on a budget, it will also not run a whole in your wallet. If price is a concern, it would be wise to reserve a table at the restaurant, as doing so gives a 30% discount on all food items.
